FULLERTON, CA — A 34-year-old man wanted on warrants for sexual assault and assault on a police officer was behind bars Thursday on suspicion of trespassing in a Cal State Fullerton building, CSU Fullerton Police said.

Romayne Demetrice Bassingame was being held on $21,500 bail, jail records showed.

Campus police on patrol arrested Bassingame after spotting a door slam at Mihaylo Hall at around 12:35 a.m. Thursday. Patrolling officers saw Bassingame exit the hall shortly after, Cal State Fullerton police Capt. Scot Wiley said.

Most of the faculty and students at CSU Fullerton are on summer vacation, which prompts local transients to break into campus buildings around this time of the year, he said.

"We're not even sure how he got in unless he was there before they locked up," Willey said. "That's not uncommon. We have people prop doors open. It's a constant challenge all the time."

While officers intended to cite the suspect for just trespassing, when asked for his ID, Bassingame tossed his wallet at police and ran off, he noted. The suspect apparently had five outstanding warrants that also included burglary and theft, Wiley said.

Police also found 25 throwing stars on him, which is a felony on a school campus, and what appeared to be methamphetamine, authorities said.

No further information was immediately known.
