HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA — Slapfish, "a seafood shack" that began as an Orange County food truck and now boasts more than 20 locations nationwide, expanded its business with this week's launch of three, signature hot sauces sold online.

“We’re excited to launch our retail line of sauces so foodies across the country can enjoy a taste of Slapfish, even if they don’t live near one our restaurants,” said Slapfish founder and chef Andrew Gruel, who took his passion for sustainable seafood from a Huntington Beach food truck to multiple brick-and-mortar restaurants.

With locations throughout Orange County, the eateries keep diners coming back with such specialties as lobster taquitos, fish tacos, shrimp burritos, traditional lobster and shrimp rolls and salads, along with sides of slaw, pickles and fries.

Chef Gruel, who has a lengthy restaurant resume and celeb-chef TV appearances, became hooked on the sustainable-seafood path after a stint directing a non-profit “Seafood for the Future” project at The Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, where he worked with like-minded chefs and fishermen, according to his bio.

Gruel hopes his restaurant's new hot-sauce line will be a boon to home chefs. “From grilling Slapfish-inspired seafood to preparing your own family’s favorites, our sauces will elevate any dish,” he said.

Available for sale online, the new Slapfish sauces are all natural and gluten free, with no msg or preservatives, and come in three flavors:

  • The Slapfish Signature Red Hot Sauce, or Trinidad, named after the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion pepper is the most traditional, beginning with a trace of vinegar, peppered flavor, then finishing with a light spice.
  • The Pineapple Habanero is a hot sauce that can be enjoyed by most anyone, as the habanero pepper and pineapple create a cool, sweet taste.
  • The Slapfish Cali Verde is a milder, green hot sauce that jumps from a cool, lime base to jalapeno heat.

The sauces sell online in 5-ounce bottles ($8) and can be ordered and shipped throughout the U.S. and Canada. Additional sauces and seasonings will be added later this year, the company said.

Slapfish locations in Orange County include: Brea; Huntington Beach; Irvine; Laguna Beach; San Clemente; and Tustin. Other California sites are in San Jose and at LAX Airport.

Nationwide locales are in Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Maryland, New Mexico, South Carolina, Virginia and Utah. See all location info here.
