ORANGE COUNTY, CA — A 23-year-old Costa Mesa woman and a 20-year-old Lake Elsinore man both died as the result of a head-on collision on California State Route 74 just west of 7th street in Perris overnight, California Highway Patrol officer Mike Lassig reported.

Shortly after 11:30 p.m., the man, driving a 2008 Honda CRV eastbound on SR-74, drifted across lanes into a Nissan Sentra, heading westbound on the same road, Lassig wrote.

"The Nissa Sentra was driving at an unknown speed as it approached the Honda CRV's location," Lassig said. "For unknown reasons at this time, the male driver allowed his Honda to travel across the painted solid double yellow lines."

The Honda CRV met the Nissan in the head-on crash that blocked all lanes of traffic, in both directions. Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported in the crash.

It is unknown at this time if drugs or alcohol played a role in this traffic collision, according to Lassig, who added that at the time of the crash, the weather was cloudy and cool with no rain.
