Person Struck, Killed On 55 Freeway

A person who had broken down in lanes on the 55 was killed Tuesday morning, emergency response causing massive traffic delays.

TUSTIN, CA — A person was killed on the 55 freeway, Tuesday, California Highway Patrol reported. Those lanes slowly reopened as of 9 a.m. but residual traffic was affected, CHP said.

Just before 6 a.m. reports were called in of a black SUV coming to a stop in lanes with hazards on. A man "wearing a lot of clothes," was seen walking back and forth in the HOV lane, was struck shortly thereafter on the 55 Northbound just south of 17th Street, CHP said.

"A black Honda Accord hit the pedestrian, who ended up in the #1 lane," a CHP spokesperson said.

Responding officers discovered a scattering of shoes, a backpack and other personal items were discovered on the 17th street onramp to the northbound 55, but CHP officers were not sure if that was related. Traffic was slow through the area, as chain reaction collisions occurred

The HOV lanes were closed as of 7:30 until further notice.
