Police Fatally Shoot Man Armed With Fake Gun In OC

A man who was falsely believed to be armed with a rifle was shot to death in Orange County by police Sunday.

SANTA ANA, CA — A man who police believed to be armed with a rifle — which ultimately turned out to be a replica — was shot to death in a parking lot in Orange County Sunday.

The shooting was reported Sunday evening after Santa Ana police officers responded to reports of a man publicly loading ammunition into a rifle-style firearm at around 5:30 p.m. in the area of Broadway and Second Street, police said.

The suspect was described as a Hispanic man in his 30s. According to police, he engaged in an altercation with officers and was shot.

After the shooting, the gun was discovered to be a replica.

He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased, police said.

No bystanders or officers were injured during the incident, authorities said.

The state Attorney General's office was investigating the officer- involved shooting, according to the SAPD.
