1 Killed, Another Injured In Freeway Shooting

After a car-to-car shooting in Diamond Bar, the victims reportedly drove nearly 30 miles to Costa Mesa where one person was pronounced dead.

COSTA MESA, CA — One person was killed and another was injured in a car-to-car shooting in Diamond Bar, authorities said.

The CHP's Santa Ana office received a 911 call around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday regarding a freeway shooting near the westbound Pomona (60) Freeway and the southbound Orange (57) Freeway in Diamond Bar.

According to spokesman Joseph Davila of the CHP, officers made contact with the motorist of a gray Toyota Tacoma, whose vehicle was struck by gunfire on the southbound 57 Freeway north of Pathfinder.

Nobody in the Tacoma was injured, but officers determined that a white Hyundai Sonata was also struck by gunfire on the southbound 57 Freeway north of Pathfinder, according to the CHP. The driver of that car, however, continued traveling after the shooting and drove to a location near Church and Walnut streets in Costa Mesa before contacting authorities, Davila said.

A male victim who was a rear-seat passenger in the Sonata was pronounced dead at the scene, Davila said, while a female in the car was taken to a hospital for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to a leg.

Both shootings are believed to be related, but the motive was not immediately clear. The Orange County Coroner's Office withheld the male passenger's identity, pending relatives' notification.
CHP officials closed the freeway transition road for several hours to investigate the shooting. There was no description immediately available of a suspect or suspect vehicle.

Anyone with information regarding the shooting was urged to contact Investigator M. Henderson or any other member of the CHP Special Enforcement Team Baldwin Park area at 626-338-1164. During non-business hours, calls should be directed to the Los Angeles Communications Center at 323-259-3200.
