ANAHEIM, CA — One man has died and at least two people were hospitalized as a result of a multi-vehicle crash that ended inside an Anaheim apartment complex Tuesday, California Highway Patrol reports.

The incident occurred shortly before 12:45 p.m. when a construction dump truck rocketed off the 57 Freeway and struck "multiple vehicles on the street below," CHP Officer Florentino Olivera said. That truck then collided into an apartment building on the 400 block of Sunkist Street in Anaheim, CHP said.

Both on-ramps and off-ramps of the 57 Freeway at Lincoln Avenue were shut down until further notice. They remained closed as of 4 p.m.

Olivera said that the dump truck crashed into a vehicle that was stopped on the off-ramp of the 57 Freeway before "careening" across Lincoln Avenue, where it struck two more vehicles. The dump truck continued through a carport before passing through one apartment building and coming to a halt inside the second.

It is not yet known why that vehicle did not appear to slow down.

The man who died was a resident living in one of the apartment building, said Olivera.

Anaheim Fire & Rescue was called to Corsican Apartment Homes by CHP, said Public Information Officer for the department, Sgt. Shane Carringer.

The driver of the dump truck has since been taken to UCI Medical Center by emergency personnel with moderate injuries, according to reports. A driver of one of the vehicles involved in the string of collisions was taken to a local hospital for complaints of pain, Olivera said.

The on-ramps and off-ramps for the 57 Freeway near Lincoln avenue were reopened at around 7 p.m. Tuesday night.
