Orange County Middle School Locked Down For Weapon Search

Police sought a suspect, seen with a handgun near this school in Tustin, Tuesday.

TUSTIN, CA —Schools were locked down in the area of Santa Ana, Tustin and Orange, Tuesday, authorities reported. Students headed to school at Hewes Middle School reported a person shouting at them from a car, and "appearing to have a weapon," an Orange County Sheriff's Department spokesperson said.

That sighting prompted a two-hour lockdown both at the middle school and nearby Foothill High School, while multiple agencies sought potential suspects.

The lockdowns were lifted by 9:45 a.m., when OCSD declared "all was clear."

Police completed their search, OCSD spokeswoman Carrie Braun said. All students and staff were safe, she said.

"We are working with the Tustin Unified School District to message to parents regarding operation is the school for the remainder of the day."

An increased presence at the school was to continue throughout the day. Classes resumed as usual, and parents were invited to pick up their children if they wished, Braun said.
