SANTA ANA, CA — A two-car crash in Santa Ana sent three adults and two children to trauma centers Sunday night, Orange County Fire Authority reported.
OCFA Fire Capt. Public Information Officer Sean Doran said of the five people sent to the hospital, one was in critical condition. Both cars were mangled from the crash, and the cause of the accident is being investigated by the Santa Ana Police Department.

The crash was reported at 8:30 p.m. at the intersection of S Lyon Street and E Edinger Avenue and resulted in intersection closure while authorities worked the scene. OCFA declared the scene of the crash a Multi-Casualty Incident, which allowed them to call reinforcements to the site.

"We declare Multi-Casualty Incidents when there's units on the scene that need additional resources for the incident they have," Doran said. "[It means] more ambulances, more support... that's a fire department function to treat as many people as we can at one time."
"It makes us go to each patient and triage them. Basically get a snapshot on what they're doing, what their needs are," Doran said.
