Anonymous Gun Buyback Will Be Held In SMC

Now in its ninth year, the program has collected more than 3,000 firearms since 2018, officials said.

SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA — The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office and several local police agencies will host an anonymous gun buyback June 6.

All firearms will be accepted with no questions asked — including 3D printed guns — with cash incentives ranging from $50 to $200 per weapon. Ammunition will also be accepted for destruction but does not qualify for a cash payment. Residents are asked to unload firearms and store them in their trunk before arriving.

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 6 at 1050 Mission Rd. in South San Francisco.

Since the program launched in 2018, more than 3,000 guns have been collected and destroyed. Sheriff Ken Binder called it a key strategy for keeping unsecured weapons from falling into the wrong hands.

Free gun locks will be distributed by Citizens for a San Mateo County Gun Buyback, a grassroots community group.

The buyback is funded through Measure K, a voter-approved half-cent local sales tax.

The Brisbane, Daly City, San Bruno and South San Francisco police departments are also participating.
