Authorities said the victim suffered injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.

HALF MOON BAY, CA — A 20-year-old beachgoer was hospitalized Wednesday after being struck by a California State Parks lifeguard vehicle while lying on the sand at a Half Moon Bay beach, authorities said.

The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office said deputies responded after receiving a report that a State Parks lifeguard vehicle had struck a person on the beach.

Deputies determined the lifeguard drove over the 20-year-old, who had been lying on the sand, according to the sheriff's office.

Initial reports indicated the lifeguard may have been distracted at the time, authorities said.

The beachgoer was taken by ambulance to a local hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.

Although the beach is under the jurisdiction of California State Parks, the sheriff's office said it was asked to investigate the incident.

The investigation remains ongoing.
