BURLINGAME, CA — A young pig with a big personality is looking for a forever home after arriving as a stray at the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA.
Peter Porker, a small black pig, recently became available for adoption after staff determined he was healthy, social and friendly.
"And just so you know, Peter Porker will grow to be at least 100 pounds, so make sure you are ready for this guy," said Colleen Crowley, communications manager for the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA.
Shelter staff said Peter Porker will need a home with a yard where he can dig, run and play, along with plenty of shade and a muddy area to cool off. Pigs use mud to regulate their body temperature, protect their skin from sunburn and help keep insects away.
Peter Porker's diet includes fresh greens, hay and commercial pig food, with fruit offered as an occasional treat.
Because pigs can grow large and require specialized care, the shelter encourages prospective adopters to ensure local zoning rules allow pet pigs before applying.
Those interested in adopting Peter Porker can complete an application at phs-spca.org or contact the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA at or 650-340-7022 for more information.
