Art from Palisades Native Chosen to Be on Permanent Display at Dow Jones HQ

Michael Levin, student at Pratt Institute, created portraits of family members in the style of the Wall Street Journal's drawing "photos."

From a press release:

A portrait series by Pacific Palisades native Michael Levin, a graduate student at New York City’s prestigious Pratt Institute, will soon be on permanent display at Dow Jones corporate offices in New York

Levin was one of 11 students chosen to take part in an initiative to create work that celebrates the rich history and future innovations of the Wall Street Journal, which commemorated its 125th anniversary this July. He was selected by representatives from WSJ, Dow Jones, and Pratt as the top student artist/designer in the Pratt Manhattan Gallery exhibition Pratt Celebrates 125 Years of The Wall Street Journal, and his work will be installed at the end of the Journal’s 125th year celebrations.

For his portrait series, Levin was inspired by four of his family members who are regular Wall Street Journal readers. He created intricate drawings in the style of WSJ’s signature hedcut design after asking each sitter to write him their thoughts on WSJ’s history. The hedcuts were constructed with their words in place of the traditional lines and dots.

Pratt Celebrates 125 Years of The Wall Street Journal exhibition features work from a range of art and design disciplines. The students, whose diverse backgrounds and interests embody the worldwide influence of the Journal, created work in their chosen medium, taking inspiration from one or more of eight themes provided by Dow Jones. The themes range from technology’s impact on media consumption to the evolution of the Journal from its 1889 four-page newsletter to the global news-gathering powerhouse it is today. The exhibition is on view at Pratt Manhattan Gallery in New York City through Aug. 21.
