The Chamber Orchestra at St. Matthew's and Choir and Soloists of St. Matthew's Parish

Friday June 5, 2015

Our 30th Anniversary season concludes with celebratory music for choir and orchestra by John Rutter, Franz Joseph Haydn and Felix Mendelssohn’s most impressive score — the Suite from “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”

  • John Rutter: Gloria
  • Franz Joseph Haydn: Te Deum
  • Felix Mendelssohn: The Suite from “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”

Mendelssohn: Suite from A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Mendelssohn’s programatic Overture for A Midsummer Night’s Dream is considered by many the greatest music ever written by a teenager. Late in life, Mendelssohn wrote a complete score of incidental music for the play. The suite, derived from the incidental music, begins with the overture and, like it, is full of charm, wit and grace. The suite concludes with one of the most famous works of all time, the familiar Wedding March.

Haydn: Te Deum for Empress Maria Theresa
When Admiral Lord Nelson visited Haydn’s employer, Prince Esterhazy, in 1800, Haydn was asked to compose a suitably festive piece in celebration of the occasion. The glorious Te Deum is that piece. A contemporary of the composer’s oratorio, The Creation, and Lord Nelson Mass, the Te Deum represents Haydn at the top of his game, writing music that is at once tuneful and dramatic.

Rutter: Gloria
John Rutter’s Gloria was composed in 1974 and has been described by Rutter as a choral symphony in three movements. We will perform the version for choir, brass and organ, bringing into play the full resources of St. Matthew’s Pardee Memorial Organ.
