Extravagant Music from Venice, Leipzig and London

Our February concert brings together twelve of Los Angeles’s finest choral singers, members of The Chamber Orchestra at St. Matthew’s, a brass ensemble and organists Edward Murray and Thomas Neenan in extravagant music spanning five centuries.

Imagine yourself in Venice, c. 1620. The Doge’s Palace looms beyond the Basilica of St. Mark’s and the famed bell tower known as the campanile. The music of Gabrieli wafts onto the piazza from inside the basilica and mixes with the calls of the street vendors and the thousands of pigeons that inhabit the place. Suddenly, you are transported to the Church of St. Thomas, Leipzig, where J.S. Bach is leading his choir and orchestra in festive music for the First Sunday after Easter. Blink again and you are in London’s Trafalgar Square. More pigeons, more street cries. This time they mix with the sacred harmonies of music by Gerald Finzi and Tarik O’Regan lofting from the nearby Church of St. Martin in the Fields.
