A multitude of factors influence a student’s capacity for making meaningful academic progress while also performing to their best of their individual capabilities, thereby leaving substantial room for fostering academic growth by addressing each and every one of these factors within an educational program. Out of all the diverse factors influencing student growth, however, one stands out for the ease with which it can be addressed as well as the potential gains made possible by simply taking a more proactive approach: the student learning environment.

On the Pervasive Influence of the Student Learning Environment

There is a wealth of data affirmatively linking one’s surroundings with feelings of physical and emotional wellbeing. Of course, one’s level of wellbeing -- perceived or otherwise -- has a significant impact on motivation and concentration, among many other things. Although this environment generally refers to the environment found within the school or academic institution the student attends, it is also important to recognize that there are many other learning environments influencing a student’s level of academic progress and performance.

It is for this reason that it is so critical that students not only have access to positive learning environments at the schools and educational programs they attend, but also for any at-home academic studies. Parents who work on cultivating a designated learning environment emphasizing the value and enjoyment associated with education are therefore more likely to foster a greater level of academic progress and achievement in the present as well as in the future.

Cultivating the Ideal Home Learning Environment

A home learning environment should be free from distraction, but it should also be a stimulating environment in which the student feels free to be creatively engaged with the academic subject matter he or she happens to be working on. It should also be an environment tailored to the individual needs of the student, as every student is unique in one way or another. Some students, for example, work best in a quiet environment within a smaller space, but others enjoy a more spacious environment with instrumental music playing at a low volume.

Since the key to creating an ideal learning environment lies in developing a clear understanding of what works best for the individual student, it may be necessary for parents to work cooperatively and engage in some trial-and-error in order to determine the most ideal learning conditions. Giving the student a sense of control or ownership over their learning environment will also go a long way toward emphasizing the inspiration and enjoyment associated with all academic pursuits, not to mention the additional positive impact on student learning gains in terms of both short- and long-term academic progress and performance.
