Groza Learning Center: How Can Tutors Encourage Independence and Executive Functioning in Pacific Palisades Students?

Tutors Encouraging Independence and Executive Functioning in Pacific Palisades Students

Students throughout Southern California are facing increasingly high-stakes academic environments, placing students from Pacific Palisades to Long Beach at a greater risk of experiencing the kind of stress that ultimately leads to a negative disposition toward academic pursuits in general. In order to ensure students develop a positive view of academia while succeeding in even the most pressure-packed of situations and circumstances, it is necessary to create a well-rounded support system designed to encourage independence and executive functioning.

According to the Groza Learning Center, there are many strategies in which parents, teachers, and tutors can contribute to the creation of a learning environment capable of firmly instilling within the student each of the following qualities: sound decision-making, executive functioning, and academic independence. The learning center, which offers tutoring services, test preparation, and many other academic programs, has developed a unique educational philosophy in which subject tutoring is often complemented by an academic management program designed to yield the aforementioned qualities in students of all skill levels.

In explaining the manner in which the learning center’s program has so successfully yielded independently motivated and high-performing students, Groza Learning Center indicated that effective academic management begins with accountability that focuses on several factors pertaining to the work produced by the student, including the timeliness, preparation, and overall quality of the student’s academic output. With effective parental support, tutors are able to hold the students accountable according to these factors while also encouraging the development of critical executive functioning skills.

The learning center also explained the importance of accurately determining a student’s academic progress across a variety of measures in encouraging the development of executive functioning skills as well as independence and sound decision-making. This process typically begins with a baseline diagnostic test designed to assist in the creation of an individual learning profile. With an individual learning profile in place, the unique needs of each individual student can be systematically addressed.

Groza Learning Center further emphasized the benefit of working with students in small-group or one-on-one tutoring sessions, noting that a small-group or individual approach makes it possible to specifically address the unique needs delineated in each student’s individual learning profile. A small, individualized setting clearly encourages a greater level of student involvement, which in turn contributes to increased student confidence as well as a renewed and independent sense of motivation.
