LAPD's Highest Ranking Black Officer Tapped to Be San Francisco Police Chief

LOS ANGELES, CA - A veteran LAPD deputy chief will be named Tuesday as police chief of San Francisco, according to a published report.

William Scott, 52, has been head of the Los Angeles Police Department's South Bureau. San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee plans to announce Scott's hiring Tuesday, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Scott will succeed acting San Francisco police Chief Toney Chaplin.

Scott's longtime administrative experience figured into the decision, as well as his work in the LAPD's professional standards bureau dealing with police reform, the newspaper reported.

"He has been part of a department that during the last 10 years has undergone its own transformation, implementing a variety of reforms under a consent decree with the Justice Department," a source told the newspaper.

Scott, whose appointment does not require confirmation by the Police Commission, is expected to be on hand this morning when Lee introduces him at a City Hall news conference.
