MECCA, CA — A vegetation fire that erupted in Mecca charred 17 acres and threatened an abandoned structure before firefighters stopped the forward rate of spread and held containment at 85 percent Thursday.
The non-injury blaze was reported about 9 p.m. Wednesday at Lincoln Street and Avenue 70, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
The agency stated that crews battled a 15-acre vegetation fire that was being hampered by strong winds. Firefighters stopped the blaze at 17 acres a few hours later, with no injuries or evacuations reported.
Crews remained at the scene as of Thursday for mop-up work and strengthening the line with resources, officials said. Firefighters will continue to search for hotspots for mop-up work.
There was no immediate word on what triggered the blaze.
