Coachella Valley Students Receive $360K In Scholarships From Carreón Foundation

The foundation has provided nearly $3 million in scholarships to more than 1,000 students since it was established in 1991.

INDIO, CA — More than 100 local students received a total of roughly $360,000 in scholarships from the Carreón Foundation during an awards ceremony in Indio.

The scholarships were presented to 120 students at the event, which was held Sunday at Shadow Hills High School. Linda Evans, La Quinta mayor and Chief Strategy Officer for Desert Care Network, was the keynote speaker for the event.

The foundation has provided nearly $3 million in scholarships to more than 1,000 students since it was established in 1991 to support the education of Coachella Valley of Mexican ancestry. The fund has since expanded to include students of African, Native American and Asian ancestry.

This year's scholarship awards were made possible through individual donors and grants, including funds from Desert Healthcare District and Foundation and One Future Coachella Valley.

Officials said the foundation honored students continuing their higher education. Past recipients have gone on to attend universities across the country, including College of the Desert, Cal State San Bernardino, USC and Harvard.
