PALM SPRINGS, CA — Palm Springs Police arrested a driver suspected of causing a DUI crash Tuesday that sent several victims to area hospitals.
Gabriel Nieto Gutierrez-Roque, a 30-year-old Rancho Cucamonga resident, was being held at the John Benoit Detention Center Wednesday on pending charges of driving under the influence.
Just before 5:30 p.m., emergency responders arrived at the scene on Indian Canyon Drive, north of Via Esquela.
Police say that one vehicle made an abrupt lane change and sideswiped another vehicle. That initial crash sent the second vehicle into opposing traffic, where it collided head-on with a third vehicle. A fourth vehicle was also involved in the crash, according to police reports.
Three people were injured and taken to a local hospital. One was listed in critical condition. Their current condition was not immediately known.
During the investigation after the crash, a temporary road closure was set on North Indian Canyon Drive between E. Raquet Club and E. Via Escuela, but reopened later the same day.
Gutierrez was slated to appear in court to answer charges Thursday at the Indio Larson Justice Center.
