DESERT HOT SPRINGS, CA — Authorities have located a body believed to be a missing 70-year-old man who was the subject of an urgent desert search, authorities announced.
The discovery was made July 26 in the Desert Hot Springs area during coordinated search efforts for Daniel "Dan" Michael Mulcahey, the Palm Springs Police Department announced.
Mulcahey was reported critically missing after he was last seen on foot Friday afternoon, July 24, in Rancho Mirage.
Concern mounted due to the region's extreme heat and a medical issue Mulcahey had recently sustained.
Police later found Mulcahey's unoccupied vehicle in Desert Hot Springs, prompting a multi-agency search and a statewide Silver Alert.
The Riverside County Sheriff's Office Coroner's Bureau responded to the scene and is performing an official identification, and is determining the cause and manner of Mulcahey's death.
Police said the case is being handled as a suspicious death investigation pending further findings to determine if foul play or criminal activity was involved.
"The Palm Springs Police Department extends its heartfelt condolences to Mr. Mulcahey's family and loved ones during this difficult time," officials said in a statement.
Multiple agencies assisted in the search, including the Desert Hot Springs Police Department, the California Highway Patrol, the Palm Springs Mounted Police Search and Rescue Team, and aviation and search-and-rescue units from the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.
