Authorities ID Big-Rig Driver Killed On 1-10 Freeway In Desert

The driver was pronounced dead at the crash scene.

CHIRIACO SUMMIT, CA — The semi-truck driver who was killed last week after his vehicle overturned on eastbound Interstate 10, in the community of Hayfield near Chiriaco Summit, has been identified by authorities.

Marco Rodriguez Lopez, 41, of Los Angeles, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner's Bureau. The crash was reported shortly before 7:30 a.m. Friday about 1.3 miles west of Red Cloud Mine Road.

Rodriguez Lopez was driving a green Freightliner tractor and hauling a trailer when he hit the freeway median, causing the big rig to overturn and land on its left side, according to the California Highway Patrol. It was unclear how fast the vehicle was going.

A SigAlert was issued and a partial freeway closure was in place for several hours.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
