Flock Camera Technician Assaulted, Threatened In Palm Desert: RSO

PALM DESERT, CA — A 31-year-old Palm Desert man was arrested Monday after allegedly threatening to stab a contractor working on a license plate reader camera, slashing the technician's tires, and vandalizing the equipment, authorities said.

Deputies responded around 10:25 a.m. to the 73000 block of Fred Waring Drive in Palm Desert following a report of an assault with a deadly weapon. Investigators learned the victim was a contractor hired by Flock Safety to replace a city-owned license plate reader camera that had been previously vandalized.

While the technician was working, the suspect approached him, slashed all four tires on his utility vehicle, damaged the replacement camera, and threatened to stab him, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

Investigators identified the suspect as Nathan Ceballos and pulled his vehicle over near Palm Desert Drive and San Marcos Avenue, taking him into custody without incident.

Deputies subsequently executed a search warrant at Ceballos' residence in the 73000 block of San Nicholas Avenue. During the search, investigators allegedly uncovered evidence linking Ceballos to the assault and additional acts of vandalism against Flock Safety equipment.

Flock Safety's automated license plate recognition technology uses network-connected cameras installed in public spaces to capture vehicle details, helping law enforcement agencies track crime suspects and stolen vehicles.

While the company's widespread expansion has drawn support from police departments, the technology has also sparked debates over surveillance and privacy, according to reporting by The New York Times.

Sheriff's officials emphasized that tampering with or destroying Flock cameras is a serious crime that carries felony charges.

It's unclear what Ceballos' motives were in the alleged attack. He was booked into the John J. Benoit Detention Center in Indio on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, criminal threats, and multiple felony counts of vandalism.

According to the sheriff's department, during the search warrant service at Ceballos' home, deputies also discovered multiple sexually intrusive videos of teenage girls recorded in public and private spaces. Authorities are working to identify the victims shown in the footage, the law enforcement agency said.
