LA QUINTA, CA — A friendly fishing competition in support and appreciation of veterans will take place at Lake Cahuilla Veterans Regional Park in La Quinta during the annual "Veterans Fishing Derby," it was announced Thursday.
The derby will get underway with a special veterans workshop from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 14 at 58075 Jefferson St.
Following the workshop, the catfish fishing competition will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., with youth prizes presented at 8 p.m. and an awards ceremony at 8:15 p.m.
This year's prizes will be awarded for the 10 largest and smallest catfish, officials said.
"This annual tradition is about more than fishing. It is an opportunity to bring our veterans, their families and our community together to recognize the men and women who have served our country," Supervisor Manuel Perez said in a statement. "Lake Cahuilla Veterans Regional Park is a special place to honor their service, strengthen community connections and enjoy the outdoors."
The event, which started in 2021, will be hosted by the Riverside County Regional Park and Open-Space District, and aims to celebrate military service through a day of fishing and other recreational opportunities available at the park.
