Animal Control Sweep Near Salton Sea Nets 34 Dogs

Ten people were cited for being out of compliance with pet regulations.

Riverside County animal control officers captured 34 dogs during a sweep today in the Salton Sea communities of North Shore and Mecca.

Twenty dogs were found wandering unattended in Mecca and 14 more were picked up North Shore. Ten people were cited for being out of compliance with pet regulations.

“I commend the department for being responsive to our constituents and for their focused and proactive efforts to enforce county ordinances and make the streets safer for children, senior citizens and families.’’

The enforcement action marked the second animal sweep in the area since one person was killed and another seriously injured in a mauling by two roaming pit bulls in North Shore.

On Sept. 8, 65-year-old Emilio Rios was found dead in the front yard of his home at 70670 Sea Gull Drive. The woman, who lived in the neighborhood, was taken to a local hospital for treatment of major injuries.

The dogs captured today were taken to the department’s shelter facility in Thousand Palms, where they were examined by veterinarians. Those animals not claimed by their owners will be made available for
adoption, if they’re deemed to have sufficiently safe temperaments for placement.
