The free Master Composter Certificate Training program will take place in Palm Desert - in-person, virtual classes. How to sign up.

PALM DESERT, CA — Palm Desert residents interested in composting can attend a free event that begins in March, the Riverside County Department of Waste Resources said.

The Master Composter Certificate Training program will take place in Palm Desert for residents interested in a more advanced look at home composting. The department said that enrollment starts Friday for the in-person training class that will run from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays, beginning March 9. This is for residents interested in a hands-on group experience, according to county officials.

"Books and study materials will be provided by the department," county officials wrote. "(An) instructor will guide students through the course, and students will build group compost piles for study and build their own vermicomposting bin."

If you are interested in virtual training, an online course starts April 4, and participants will have up to three months to study and complete the course through online study materials and quizzes before they earn their certificate, according to county officials.

The certificate program will offer participants a more advanced look at the variety of methods used in the home composting process, county officials said. They will also receive basic knowledge of the composting process and about the waste stream in Riverside County.
