Veterans Day Observed at Events in Palm Desert, Coachella Valley

Our local heroes were honored in town.

Observances both celebratory and somber were held in the Coachella Valley Wednesday in honor of Veterans Day.

In Palm Desert, a Veterans Day celebration started at the city’s Civic Center Park, featuring speeches from military members such as Lt. Col. Brian Middleton, Commanding Officer, 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines, based at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms.

In Coachella, current and former military members were also treated to free breakfast at the Spotlight 29 Casino.

In La Quinta, 31 veterans were honored by having their names added to the city’s veterans memorial monument at Civic Center Park. Since 2004, the city has added names to the memorial each Veterans Day in tribute to local veterans.

Indian Wells held its Veterans Day Ceremony at the Eisenhower Walk of Honor. Former U.S. Marine Corps fighter pilot Jack McEnroe was the keynote speaker.

The 19th annual Palm Springs Veterans Day Parade began this afternoon on Palm Canyon Drive from Ramon to Alejo roads. A concert and fireworks display followed the parade festivities.

The Palm Springs Air Museum also held a memorial service for Brig. Gen. Fritz Payne of Rancho Mirage, a former fighter pilot who died at the age of 104 this year.
