Cyclist Struck, Killed In Cathedral City Crosswalk
The bicyclist entered an intersection against a red light when he was struck by a vehicle that failed to stop, police say.
CATHEDRAL CITY, CA — A bicyclist who entered a Cathedral City intersection against a red light was killed in a late-night collision, police said Friday. The oncoming driver failed to stop for a red signal, police say.
The 48-year-old bicyclist, a resident of Cathedral City, died at the scene, according to officials. Their name was being held pending notification of next of kin.
The crash occurred shortly before 11 p.m. as the bicyclist headed westbound on Ortega Road and entered the intersection with Date Palm Drive in a crosswalk, but against a red traffic signal.

The vehicle heading south on Date Palm Drive also entered the Ortega intersection against a red light when it struck the bicyclist.
"The driver of the vehicle was transported to a nearby hospital to receive treatment for minor facial injuries," according to Cathedral City Police Department Sgt. Ryan Schuelke.

The exact cause of the collision is still under investigation, and no arrests have yet been made.
