LA QUINTA, CA — An investigation was underway Saturday morning into the fatal shooting of an assault with a deadly weapon suspect by a Riverside County sheriff's deputy and California Highway Patrol officer in La Quinta.

Deputies from the Palm Desert station responded at 12:40 p.m. Friday to the 39000 block of Washington Street, just north of Interstate 10, where a woman had run into a business and said her estranged husband was armed with a rifle and trying to kill her, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

The suspect was spotted at the location sitting inside a red Ford pickup truck, which he put into gear as deputies approached and sped away from the area, prompting a high-speed pursuit involving deputies and the CHP, the department said.
