Green Acres Sustainable Living Farm

The FG Creative ad agency hosted a fundraiser at its Palm Desert headquarters yesterday for the young and exciting Green Acres Sustainable Living Farm, a nonprofit that calls itself “an amusement park of education.” It’s the brainstorm of Christiana Green, a smart, energetic woman who grew up on a farm and believes that today’s kids are out of touch with the real world around them, and what a great concept it is in this era of our concerns about the food supply and the planet’s deterioration.

The 6-acre Farm is in Anza, about 30 miles southwest of Palm Desert, and it’s a teaching farm that Christiana has developed to educate children and families about sustainable living practices and renewable energy – topics that are all over the media now that the evidence of global warming and resource depletion is hanging over us like a guillotine. She also stresses the importance of community, which is always enriched by working and dining with friends and family.

A visit to the Farm is a great way to introduce kids to chickens, pigs, ducks, and horses as well as vegetable gardening. The purpose is to educate children to make healthier food choices and to cultivate and consume their own food while reducing their carbon footprint. It’s an original concept, with her next step being to get local schools to participate. To that end, she has created a curriculum for each section of Green Acres SLF based on California State standards for each grade.

By the way, not only does Christiana have a green thumb, she’s a very creative cook. She prepared all of the food for the fundraiser’s buffet, from falafel and hummus to amazing chopped salads – all fresh and made from scratch. For more information or to make a donation, you can phone her at (951) 551-6233 or email her at greenacresSLF@gmail.com. You can also listen to a live interview this Sunday on “Walking on Eggs: Cracking the Food Myths” broadcasting from 1:05 to 2:00 on Money Radio 1200.
