Ice Skating Under the Desert Sky: Outdoor Ice Skating Rink to Open at The River

RANCHO MIRAGE, CA - The River shopping center in Rancho Mirage will usher in the holiday season Tuesday with the opening of the Coachella Valley's first outdoor ice skating rink.

The River's outdoor waterfront has been transformed into a skating rink that will be open daily through Jan. 8. Skating sessions will cost $15 and include skate rental.

"We're thrilled to offer an activity for everyone to enjoy during this special time of year," said Ungar Kung, director of acquisitions for CheerLand Investment Group, which owns the shopping center.

"Ice skating at the River is for all -- families and friends, the young and young at heart, locals and visitors -- and this will be the place for some of the best entertainment, people watching, shopping and dining in the Coachella Valley over the holidays," Kung said.

Along with special events, including a "Holiday Spectacular" and tree lighting next Tuesday, local bands and DJs will perform holiday music to accompany most skating sessions.

The hours for the rink will be:

• MONDAY: 12pm-10pm
• TUESDAY: Seniors 10am-12pm, Public 12pm-10pm
• WEDNESDAY: 12pm-10pm
• THURSDAY: 12pm-8pm
• FRIDAY: 11am-10pm
• SATURDAY: 11am-10pm
• SUNDAY: 12pm-8pm
