Indio Students Gifted With Dictionaries Courtesy Of Rotary Club
Every third grade student received the gift.
Indio Rotary:The Indio Noon Rotary is proud to have completed their annual fall project of helping Indio’s Third Graders. The Indio Noon Rotarians have visited every third grade class in Indio‘s Elementary Schools and have presented them with a brand new Dictionary.
Each bright-eyed Third Grader received their very own Webster Dictionary. For many of these students, this may be their very first book that they now own. Representatives from the Indio Noon Rotary Club distributed the books and helped explain to these scholars the magical tool they now possess – “words” with their meanings at their fingertips. To demonstrate this new-found power, the students would call out words that interested them and the Rotarian would find their word and shared with them the meaning and examples on how to use the word. These Dictionaries also included “bonus” material including World Maps, Countries of the World information, U.S. States information, List of Presidents, Branches of Government, and the Declaration of Independence. There is also a list of Important Events in U.S. History. Indio Noon Rotary Club President Steve Morgan said, “This is one of the most exciting projects we work on each year. The excitement and pride exhibited by these third graders is magical and reminds us why we are Rotarians. These are our future leaders and Rotary, through their various programs, is focused on helping them achieve greatness.”
12 elementary schools in Indio were visited. Over 1,225 dictionaries found new homes. All Indio Third Graders received the gift of words from a Rotarian. Youth is one of Rotaries Avenues of Service. The Indio Noon Rotary also pays for transportation so that third grade classes can visit the Coachella Valley History Museum in Indio. Working with DSUSD, they stage the annual Coachella Valley Middle School Math Field, with the 26th edition happening April 25th , 2020. They also host an Interact Club at Shadow Hills High School, sponsor juniors to Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA), and annually provide scholarships to graduating seniors to continue their educational pursuits. Since 1949, the City of Indio has been served by Rotary. Our group shares their time and energy to support our community. We meet weekly to network, hear speakers on various subjects, and work on service projects. Our club is always looking for new members. Indio Noon meets Tuesdays at Noon in the Special Events Center at Fantasy Springs. We help members become better leaders and in that process, we help our communities become better places to live.
