Knife-Wielding Suspect Dies After Deputy-Involved Shooting

The individual was shot and wounded by deputies Tuesday evening near the Agua Caliente Resort Casino in Rancho Mirage.

RANCHO MIRAGE, CA – A man who reportedly advanced on law enforcement while waving a knife and "exhibiting bizarre behavior" Tuesday evening near the Agua Caliente Resort Casino in Rancho Mirage died at an area hospital after being shot and wounded by deputies, according to authorities.

Deputies from the Palm Desert Sheriff's Station were called at 7:23 p.m. to Bob Hope Drive and Ramon Road to a report of an individual armed with a knife and "exhibiting bizarre behavior," the Riverside County Sheriff's Department said.

The man ignored commands from deputies and was Tasered, however that proved ineffective, and the person, still armed, advanced toward deputies and subsequently was shot and injured, the agency said.

Deputies performed life-saving measures on the suspect, who was taken to a local hospital, where he later was pronounced dead, the department said.

The identification of the man was withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The deputies involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave in keeping with department policy, and their names were not released.
