Lakers Legend to Get Statue At Staples Center

Michael Jordan has one in Chicago, John Stockton has one in Salt Lake City... even George Mikan has one in Minneapolis.

Now, former Laker center Kareem Abdul-Jabbar will join them in being honored with a statue.

Abdul-Jabbar was in the desert  for a screening of the documentary film "On the Shoulders of Giants".  The film was produced by Abdul-Jabbar and based on his book of the same name.

Kareem's statue, to be unveiled during the 2012-2013 NBA season, will join those of former Lakers Magic Johnson, Jerry West and broadcaster Chick Hearn on the concourse outside Staples Center.  No firm date for the unveiling has been announced.

Boxer Oscar de la Hoya and former Kings hockey great Wayne Gretzky also have statues erected on the concourse.

According to the to LA Times, Abdul-Jabar had been critical of Lakers management for not honoring him sooner after his retirement in 1989.
