Massive Children's Consignment Event in La Quinta to Draw Hundreds Seeking Deals
An estimated 35,000 items are filling up a normally-vacant retail space near LG's.
If you drive by the corner of Washington and Highway 111 in La Quinta in the next few days, you may notice an interesting phenomenon-- as hundreds of moms, dads and grandparents line up looking for deals on thousands of children’s and maternity items.
It’s time for the Spring 2015 ‘Monkey in the Middle’ consignment event.
Started by two moms back in 2011, the event is now held twice a year, and has grown each time. Organizers say that they expect to have approximately 35,000 gently used items at this year’s bash.

Founders Brianna Van Lierop of Riverside and Jules Loya of La Quinta say they came up with the idea for ’Monkey in the Middle’ after becoming stay-at-home moms and developing a need to get more creative with keeping their own little monkeys fashionably decked-out on a tightened budget.
“We realized the need for this not only for our families, but also for the families in the desert that want to buy the nicest clothes and toys for their children but might not necessarily be able to afford those high-end labels,” said Loya. “At our consignment event you will find those name brand items, but for a fraction of the cost that you will buy them new.”

The ladies say they spend months prepping for the event, which now draws a crowd around the block of shoppers. They even hand-inspect every item that comes in for consignment before it hits the shelves, looking out for any damaged or recalled products.
This year’s Spring event kicks off Friday, March 13. It lasts for three days, and items are discounted on Sunday.
Hours are as follows:
- Friday, March 13:
10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.: Military and Public Safety Pre-Sale (must have ID; limited to first 50 in line)
12 noon to 8 p.m.: Public Sale - Saturday, March 14:
10 a.m. to 11 a.m.: Grandparents’ Sale
11 a.m. to 5 p.m.: Public Sale - Sunday, March 15:
10 a.m. to 3 p.m.: Public Sale, with 50% off many items
The event is located at 78525 Hwy 111 in La Quinta, next to LG’s Prime Steakhouse.
