Paul Giamatti And Penelope Cruz Earn Palm Springs Film Festival Nods

Actors Paul Giamatti and Penelope Cruz will each receive awards over two separate days at the January international film festival.

PALM SPRINGS, CA — Two more actors will be receiving awards at the 2024 Palm Springs International Film Festival, that agency announced. Actors Paul Giamatti and Penelope Cruz will each receive awards over two separate days.

The Palm Springs International Film Festival will be held from Jan. 4- 15, 2024.

During the festival, numerous actor awards are being handed out over multiple days. On Jan. 4, at the Palm Springs Convention Center, Giamatti will be presented the Icon Award for his body of work and his latest role in "The Holdovers."

On Jan. 5, at the Parker Palm Springs, Cruz will be presented with the Creative Impact in Acting Award as part of Variety's annual 10 Directors to Watch and Creative Impact Awards brunch, they announced.

Giamatti is slated for the award previously presented to Glenn Close, Willem Dafoe, Michael Douglas, Robert Duvall, Lady Gaga, Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep.

In 'The Holdovers,' Paul Giamatti inhabits a complex character who is both challenging and rewarding, and ultimately reminds us of what it means to be connected as human beings," festival chairman Nachhattar Singh Chandi said in a statement. "For his storied career of quintessential cinematic roles, it is our honor to present the Icon Award to Paul Giamatti for this career-best performance."

Giamatti has been nominated for a Broadcast Film Critics Association Award and a Critics Choice Award for Best Actor in a Drama Series for his performance in "Billions." He's also won Emmy, SAG and Golden Globe Awards for best actor in a miniseries for his portrayal of the title character in "John Adams."

About Penelope Cruz

Cruz, 49, is a four-time Oscar nominee also known for her multidimensional performances in "Volver," "Parallel Mothers" and "Nine." Her latest film, director Michael Mann's "Ferrari," earned her a Gotham Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Performance.

"More than 30 years after her stunning film debut in Bigas Lunas' Venice Festival prize winner, `Jamón Jamón,' Penelope Cruz continues startling global film audiences with her limitless versatility in films created by the world's finest directors," Variety's executive vice president of content Steven Gaydos said in a statement.

"Her long association with Pedro Almodóvar has won her major accolades, and she took home the Oscar for Woody Allen's `Vicky Cristina Barcelona,"' Gaydos continued. "It's Variety's great honor to present our Creative Impact in Acting to Penelope Cruz, for both her illustrious career and for her powerful performance as the unforgettable woman at the heart of 'Ferrari."'
