Serena Williams took to the courts in Indian Wells Friday to play her first match at the BNP Paribas Open since 2001, facing Romanian Monica Niculescu.

Williams wrote in a column published on Time magazine’s website last month that she was returning to the tournament in a spirit of “forgiveness,” although she said the relentless booing she received from fans when she last played in the event haunted her for a long time.
