Proposed Aquatic Center Fees Released

Palm Desert residents could have to pay up to $4 for a visit to the city’s new Aquatic Center, and up to $550 for an annual pass, according to city documents released Monday.

The Palm Desert Parks and Recreation is set to vote at its 8:30 a.m. Tuesday meeting on general admission fees to the Aquatic Center, which will be operated by the YMCA of the Desert.

The community pool is set to open Memorial Day weekend, but that could be delayed depending on the arrival of a pool pump, according to city spokesman David Hermann. The grand opening is set for Saturday, June 11.

The proposed fees seem to favor local residents over non-residents.

According to a city staff report, all group rates, rental fees, lane rental fees, facility rentals and concession fees will be determined by the YMCA.

“Staff believes this will give the YMCA the flexibility needed to respond to market constraints,’’ according to the report.

By comparison, an annual pass Knott's Soak City in Palm Springs costs $54.99 for ages 12 to 61 and $49.99 for ages 3 to 11 and 62+. (An annual combination pass for Knott's Berry Farm and Knott's Soak City is $89 for ages 12 to 61 and $84.99 for ages 3 to 11 and 62+.)

The cost of a yearly pass to the 24 Hour Fitness Center at 42900 Jackson Street in Indio, which has a pool, is $349.99.
