Utility Agency Invests $23.5M To Replace Aging Transformers Throughout Coachella Valley

LA QUINTA, CA — The Imperial Irrigation District announced Friday it will invest $23.5 million to replace aging transformers at three Coachella Valley facilities in an effort to improve electric reliability.

The transformer replacement project will include the Monroe and La Quinta substations and the Coachella switching station, according to the IID.

"By replacing aging transformers before they become a larger issue, IID is investing in the infrastructure our communities depend on, especially during the hot summer months when reliable power is most critical," IID Board Chairwoman Karin Eugenio said.

Transformers help electricity move safely through the power grid, and replacing the aging equipment is intended to reduce reliability issues, according to the agency.

The project is part of IID's "Powering Our Community Together" initiative, which focuses on strengthening the electric system, modernizing infrastructure and supporting reliable public power service, officials said.

Due to the time needed for engineering, procurement and construction, the replacement equipment is expected to be placed into service between 2028 and 2029.

"These investments may not always be visible to customers, but they area critical to keeping the electrical system strong," Eugenio added.
