PALM SPRINGS, CA — The Palm Springs Art Museum has named Cesar Garcia-Alvarez as curator-at-large for Q+Art, dedicated to showcasing LGBTQ+ art and artists, during the next two-year curatorial rotation, it was announced Friday.
Christine Vendredi, chief curator of the museum, commented on his abilities in the new role, saying in part, "We are thrilled to welcome Cesar in this new role. His approach to the collection creates new connections between artists, histories and ideas, while opening up new possibilities for how we understand and present queer art."
Q+Art was founded in 2023 in an effort to advance the recognition of queer art, artists and histories through exhibitions, programs, collection building, community engagement and education.
Garcia-Alvarez succeeds David Evans Frantz, who served from 2024-2026. Prior to his role, he served as associate director and senior curator at LAXART and has held curatorial roles in several art projects, including the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles and Desert X in 2021.
The Mexican-born native will begin his tenure at the museum Saturday with a new art piece dedicated exclusively to Q+Art titled "Enter Pirates."
"I'm deeply honored to help shape an initiative that feels both urgently and genuinely singular. Q+Art is an opportunity to think expansively about what queer art can be and to recover overlooked histories, complicate the ones we think we know, and create unexpected relationships between artists, artworks and audiences," Garcia-Alvarez said.
