PALM SPRINGS, CA — A Palm Springs International Airport-commissioned economic impact study revealed that the airport generated roughly $2.6 billion in economic output and supported more than 16,000 jobs last year.
"PSP is more than our community's gateway to the world. It is one of the Coachella Valley's most important economic engines," Victoria Carpenter, interim executive director of aviation at PSP, said in a statement "As we invest in the airport's future, we are also fueling jobs, local businesses and long-term opportunity in the Coachella Valley."
According to the study, the airport's economic activities came from three primary sources — airport services, capital investments and visitor spending.
The airport services, which includes airlines, concessionaires, rental car companies and government agencies, supported 6,223 jobs and created $1 billion in output.
Visitor spending, which defined as commercial service and general aviation visitors, supported 10,082 jobs and generated $1.5 billion in output. Officials said the finances from visitor spending supports hotels, restaurants, retailers, transportation providers and other businesses across the region.
Airport officials invested $47.2 million in capital improvements last year, which supported 294 jobs and generated $59 million in output.
"These numbers reflect thousands of people whose livelihoods are connected to PSP," Mayor Naomi Soto said in a statement. "The airport's growing impact means new employment opportunities, local business serving our visitors and a remote workforce flying in and out for business."
