Palm Springs Police Lt. William Hutchinson Announces Retirement

PALM SPRINGS, CA — Palm Springs Police Lt. William Hutchinson will retire from the department after serving for more than two decades in law enforcement.

Hutchinson started out as a police explorer at the age of 14, then became a reserve police officer at 19 and was hired full-time in 1998, according to the Palm Springs Police Department.

During his time in the department, he helped establish the agency's social media presence, founded and built the Coachella Valley Real Time Intelligence Center, helped launch the "Drone as First Responder" program and responded to numerous critical incidents within the city, including serving as incident commander during the May 2025 car bombing that damaged the American Reproductive Centers fertility clinic and other businesses.

Hutchinson served on the Police Officers' Association and Police Management Association boards, in different roles, including as vice president and president. He also served on the department's SWAT and Crime Suppression teams, which was credited with seizing multiple pounds of illicit drugs and hundreds of thousands in U.S. currency, police said.

He and his team at the Inland Crackdown Allied Task Force received the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy's 204 HIDTA award for outstanding cooperative effort after dismantling a Guadalajara-based drug- trafficking pipeline into the Inland Empire.

His retirement follows former Police Chief Andy Mills retirement last weekend. It was not immediately known the date set for Hutchinson's departure.

"I am beyond grateful to the community of Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley," Hutchinson said in a statement. "This city has given me a good life and provided for me and my family. The years have brought tremendous experience, pain, joy and many challenges — and for all of it, I am forever grateful."
