Weather forecast:
1. Traffic woes pose barrier for Palo Alto's housing plan on San Antonio (paloaltoonline.com) — Palo Alto’s push to add about 1,500 homes along San Antonio Road is running into serious transportation hurdles, from heavy traffic to scarce bike and transit options. City planners, consultants, and neighbors are wrestling with costly bikeway proposals, limited bus service, and low-parking projects like a 167-unit complex at 788 San Antonio that could spill cars into nearby streets.
2. District Middle School Math Validation Test (thecampanile.org) — Palo Alto Unified is keeping its middle school math validation test, which lets students qualify for an accelerated pathway that can move them into Geometry Honors by 8th grade. District leaders say the exam is meant to ensure fair, evidence-based acceleration, while teachers and data highlight both the limited classroom impact and the pressures some students feel around advanced tracks.
3. Admin reverses theatre director's reassignment after community outcry (thecampanile.org) — Palo Alto High School’s theater director will stay in her role after district leaders reversed a controversial reassignment following strong pushback from students, parents and alumni. Sarah Thermond will also lead theater at Greene Middle School, a move she hopes will strengthen continuity and enrollment between the two Palo Alto programs.
4. Superintendent Choice Process (thecampanile.org) — Palo Alto Unified is on its third acting superintendent in two months as the school board launches a search for both an interim and permanent leader. Trustees, staff, parents, and students are debating transparency, search methods, and what qualities the next superintendent should bring to a high-performing, student-centered district.
5. Council rejects plan to rein in compounds of the wealthy (padailypost.com) — Palo Alto City Council has rejected a proposal aimed at curbing large residential “compounds” like Mark Zuckerberg’s cluster of homes in Crescent Park, saying the city has higher priorities and legal concerns. Instead, council will explore broader rules on construction and vacant homes citywide, after neighbors complained about years of building, security, and changing neighborhood character.
