Stanford professor surprises kids after winning Nobel Prize (abcnews.com) β Stanford professor Karl Deisseroth, who works in Palo Alto, just learned he's won the Nobel Prize in medicine for pioneering optogenetics and celebrated by surprising his kids with the news. New Palo Alto art gallery launches with 'Calder (marinij.com) β Palo Alto residents can now explore a new Hauser & Wirth gallery and bookshop in the historic Hamilton Avenue post office, featuring an Alexander Calder-focused exhibition. Open Tuesday through Saturday with free admission through January 24, 2027, the space also plans talks and special events, giving locals a fresh downtown arts destination to drop into regularly.

The ultrawealthy are buying nearby homes to keep staff close (fortune.com subscription) β In Palo Alto's Crescent Park, Mark Zuckerberg has assembled at least 11 nearby homes, some sitting empty or used for guests and staff, raising concerns among neighbors about noise, parking, and neighborhood character. City leaders recently rejected a proposal to regulate owners with multiple properties on one block, leaving residents worried that this kind of billionaire compound-building could spread to other local streets.

VA rolls out CLEAR login option and in-person identity verification pilot (nextgov.com) β If you use VA Palo Alto, you can now verify your identity and log into VA.gov using CLEAR's facial-recognition system, including at new on-site biometric kiosks. The pilot, part of a national rollout under the Trump administration, aims to make it easier for local veterans to access health care and benefits online alongside existing Login.gov and ID.me options.
