Vectors, animals capable of transmitting diseases to humans, are a threat to the health and quality of life of humans.This class will address the issue of new species of mosquitoes that have been recently introduced in California and neighboring counties, their potential vector capabilities for emerging diseases, such as the Zika virus, and their habits that may favor breeding in gardens and small containers.

There will be a brief introduction to the concepts of vectors and vector-borne diseases. There will also be a review of the free services that the County of Santa Clara is providing through its Vector Control District.

Biographical information: José Colomé has a F.M.D. degree from the National University of Córdoba, Argentina, and an M.P.H. in Epidemiology from the University of South Florida, USA. As a community outreach specialist for the Santa Clara County Vector Control district, he is in charge of coordinating outreach campaigns aimed to inform the public about vectors and vector-borne diseases, to disseminate related news, and to report about the District´s activities and vector monitoring data for the County.
