PALO ALTO, CA — The Palo Alto Unified School District is requiring students in elementary and middle school to wear a face mask while outdoors.

Students may remove their mask outside if they are not within six feet of another person, Superintendent Dr. Don Austin said in an online announcement last Friday.

"Tracking unmasked and unvaccinated students is problematic and challenging," Austin wrote. "After consulting with other school districts, PAUSD made the decision to add outdoor masking as an additional layer of protection."
