Peninsula Man Shot Dead Playing Pokémon Go in SF

The 20-year-old graduated from Junipero Serra High School in 2015.

SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA – A San Mateo man has been identified in what appears to be a random act of violence, in which a Pokémon Go player lost his life while enjoying the popular game.

Twenty-year-old Calvin Riley was out at San Francisco's Aquatic Park while playing Pokémon Go on Saturday night when he was shot in the torso just before 10 p.m., according to police and family friends. He was pronounced dead at the location.

Police have released few details about the shooting and have not identified any suspects. However, loved ones have set up a GoFundMe page in memory of the young man and indicated the reason Riley was in the area.
"As of now all we know is Calvin was shot randomly while playing Pokémon Go," Gabriel Antonio Morales wrote on the page.

Riley had moved to the Bay Area from Lowell, Massachusetts. He graduated from Junipero Serra High School in San Mateo in 2015, the school confirmed in a Facebook post.

Since then, he attended San Joaquin Delta College, where he played for the school's baseball team, according to the school. In addition to his parents, he leaves behind a younger brother and sister.

"Due to this cruel world we live in, a part of my family was taken from us," Morales said on GoFundMe. "When we got a call at 4:30 am saying he's gone I thought I was having a bad dream. We've had too many laughs, too many memories, too many moments that I will cherish for the rest of my life."

As of Monday morning, nearly $42,000 had been raised for the "Cal Riley Funeral Fund" that was set up by Morales on GoFundMe. If you would like to donate, click here.
