“Our goals are threefold. One is to raise the awareness about the possibilities available to people with computing and engineering backgrounds. Another is to highlight the amazing work that many of our graduates are doing that has a profound impact on the world. The third is to celebrate this work. Unlike athletics and performing arts, one rarely sees people cheering in the stands about a programmer. We have some incredible people who grew up in Palo Alto and who are changing the world in wonderful ways. This event is for anyone, young or old, that is interested in engineering and learning more about the opportunities in PAUSD,” said Gunn Computer Science (CS) and Mathematics teacher Josh Paley.

The Gunn Computer Science program strives to offer a robust, multi-year sequence of courses starting with foundational classes in functional and object-oriented programming. There is also a CS Principles class for students who want to experiment with programming and with various computer science-related topics before dedicating hours to learning code. Additional offerings include mobile computing and an Advanced Placement (AP) Computer Science class that brings theory and application together in novel projects.

Engineering is not all computing, and there are offerings that specialize in other directions. “We have an outstanding Automotive Technology program. The Engineering Tech class has the flavor of what it’s like to be at a start-up company, and the Gunn Robotics Team has been recognized nationally over many years. We also have a terrific Biotech class, Project Lead The Way engineering classes, and more,” said Paley.

This free community event will be held on Tuesday, May 26, from 7:00 to 9:30 p.m. in Spangenberg Theater at Gunn High School (780 Arastradero Road, Palo Alto).
