Show People by Paul Weitz Plays Downtown Redwood City

Tom, a rich young technology entrepreneur, hires 2 Broadway actors to play his parents to impress his fiancee. Hijinx ensue. Laughs are had.

Originally produced at New York City’s Off-Broadway stalwart the Second Stage Theatre in 2006, Show People is a funny, insightful look at the lives of actors and the theatre. Penned by Paul Weitz, best known for About a Boy and the American Pie films, the play combines elements of Albee, Pirandello and Ira Levin as it reveals and skewers the theatrical life.

Marnie and Jerry are Broadway actors who haven’t worked in years. At Jerry’s insistence, they take on a wildly unorthodox job for the young, rich tech entrepreneur Tom, impersonating his parents over a weekend. But as the weekend progresses the action takes some dark and twisted turns as the characters discover there is no business like show business.
